It's a technique that made a lot of people angry, but also made a lot of people money. I personally think people may get the wrong idea, but that doesn't mean that my 1/7 Billionth of an opinion is the one you should listen to. Marketing MUST be tested. Ideas MUST be tested. They ran ads like, "Free membership" call now before it's too late! Then you would go there thinking you had a free membership just to find out it was on different terms that involved the same if not more money. Let us make your payments sounds just like that. People are getting wise to that.
